11/09 Gattaca & Ch6

Today's class is going to be a mix of different things. Lot's to acomplish, not a lot of time to do it. I love the vacation time, but it does require us to be more focused, sorry.

We will start by finishing Gattaca. At the end of class, I will ask you to post questions/comments about the film we watched. Please finish this post before the end of the week (by Saturday would be good).

We will have a few minutes between the end of the film to discuss chapter6. Chapter6 is good stuff for any researched writing assignments you will have. As it is applicable to all your current and future writing work, and thus very valuable to you, I will not be assessing your understanding of it. Still, if you have questions about the content I do suggest you ask.

After about 10minutes to discuss the book, we will begin our lecture.

After the lecture, there should be some time for questions, then I will hand out the Unit3 (future-time) writing assignment. This is in addition to the writing assignment due next Tuesday on Gattaca (the Tuesday assignment is discussed on the Gattaca running sheet I gave you before we watched the film. I hope that isn't too confusing.

Ok, that's the plan. Let's get to work!

I think this film is a little bit complicated and express recent concern of DNA and identify us by using DNA. when I watched this film first time, I could not understand this at all but I watched this again, I understood most of them. but I could not understand why hair was attached to the letter. I cannot understand the meaning of it.

I have to watch this move again because I don't understand well.
I don't know about Dr. Lamar. In this movie he looks mysterious, and I think he is key person for the story. In the last sence, why dose he allow Vincent to go to Taitan even if he knows Vincent is in-vailed? Dose he know already that Vincent is in-vailed??
I think the technique of decoding DNA is very high quality, but it makes me feel a little fear. It is great that the people can detect who the peason is by a piece of his eyelash! However, do the people need to be managed their ID so particularly, and do they need to make genetically modified human beings?

This film is related to bioethics. Therefore, the film is difficult. Concerning DNA,I think that people shouldn't maneuver DNA because people shoudn't intervene the field.I couldn't understand why Eugene decided to die after Vincent goes to Titan in the last scene.

I like this film because Eugene and Dr. Lamar’s action are nice. However, I have three questions about the film. One is that what Vincent is done to his legs when he is shorter than Eugene before accident in the process of becoming Jerome. The second is that why Anton nearly drowns in both scenes of chicken. The other is that why Vincent cut his finger by a shell on the beach when he was a child.

This film is difficult for me but it is interesting films because the possibility that human being has by nature does not regard only DNA in the end. If this situation will happen in the future, the boredom spread our world because DNA has the important to measure the ability that we have. This indicates we can look our posibilities whether we succeed or not Moreover, we can know time when we die. I do not want to spend my life considering about these things.
I wonder why Vincent does not use his urine before he rides on the space ship. This is a betrayal because he promised Jerome to go to Titan. Why he chooses the way that he becomes invalid in the end?

I could not understand the reason why he rabs his skin. Is there any connection with DNA??

I enjoyed this movie very much, though I was shocked at the end of the film because Jerome killed himself.
I have some questions. I don't understand why Vincent left his home, and why Jerome killed himself. I owed Tsutaya the film, so it will help me understand the reasons.

This film is a little confusing, but it's worth seeing more than twice because like Dr.St. the more we see the more theme we can find. It's interesting to find. This is my guess of the film: This film is about future when technology develop so that people can't find interest on the earth because we know everything around us. The film doesn't have much expression of feeling like joyment, sadness, shoutness, etc. Then space is only interest for them, especially only for valid.
This will happen if technology develop at this rate. We can see similar situation. In the past, people lived without traveling to other place. As time came, people could enjoy traveling in Japan. And people could travel out of Japan. And now, I heard there is a bussiness of producing space-journey for normal man, of course it costs a lot. The cost will decrease. This is similar to this film.
Computer technology enables us to know the world from anywhere. So going other place became the act of cheching how information they collected was true. In film, there is a room crowded with a lot of computers.
Valid and in-valid shows there are many people who are created by copy. Wow, terrible world.

This film is more enjoyable than other films we watched in the class bacause this film covers many genres like romance and suspense. Moreover, I like the process of Vincent and Jerome’s starting to understand each other. I enjoyed watching this film not only for class work but also for my enjoyment. However, this film is complicated a little for me.
I watched twice and could understand most part of the film, but I could not understand why Jerome (Eugene) gave his hair to Vincent and killed himself in the ending scene.

When I watched Gattaca, I didn't understand why Vincent pretended to be Jenome. This film is a little difficult to understand, because the story complicated. I have a question. I could not understand why Eugene killed himself.

When I watched this movie, I was very confusing because it was so compricated. But the story was very interesting and deep(it makes audience consider deeply.) Moreover, this film treats biochemistry and that is one of the reasons why this movie's story was difficult and interesting. I have a question about this film that what Eugene's merit to give his DNA to the main character was. If he gave his DNA for free, he would be just nice and kind person. Isit true? Was he just nice guy? I am still wondering about this.

This novie was made in 1997, so a lot of improved techniques were used in the film. And the acrors in the film are familiar than the actors we have watched before, so I enjoyed watching it. However, I am confused the ending. Why did Eugene kill himself? Is it important for the whole message of the film?

This movie is difficult for me because the story is complicated, and I sometimes could not catch characters' conversations, so I missed important information to understand this movie. Also, there are some actions which I can not understand the meanings, especially suicide of Eugene.

I watched this movie twice. At the second time, I could understand the story than first time. The story is very complicated and difficult to understand completely, but it is worth to watch many times. The more i watch it, the more i can understand and evjoy it.
I have two questions. One is why Jerome kills himself. The other is why Irene reserches Jerome's data after the murder of a directer. Does not she know the truth which Jerome pretends to be someone else, until he tells her the truth??

I watched this movie twice. This time I could understand much the content of the film before, but I am not sure Why a man who introduced Jerome to Vincent suggested to pretend a vaild man. To do so did that man get some advantege?

I enjoyed this film. It was interesting movie for me. This film is relate to the topic of DNA. I think it is interesting because these days many people are concerning about clone. So, we can watch the film, comparing with real world. What happened in the film can happen in reality, I think. But this film's story was so complicated that it was difficult for me to understand. So, I need to watch the film again. I'm not sure why Eugine acccept to give his identity to Vinsent.
